Rules for lighting lamps:
It is believed that worshiping God twice a day, morning and evening, is very auspicious. Keep in mind that while performing Aarti, first make a Swastika with Roli in the puja plate and then offer flowers in it and then keep a lamp.
1. Take special care that you blow the conch before and after the Aarti. If possible, conch can be blown during the Aarti and also in between.

2. While performing Aarti, try to rotate the plate in the shape of the letter Om.

3. While performing the Aarti of the Lord, one should rotate it four times towards the feet of the deity, twice towards the navel and finally once towards the mouth. Repeat this entire process a total of seven times.

4. During Aarti, keep in mind that do not re-light an already lit lamp by placing wick or camphor in it. If the lamp is made of clay, then replace it with a new one, and if the lamp is made of metal, then wash it and use it again.

5. Whenever you perform Aarti of Gods and Goddesses, keep in mind that you should not be sitting. If you are physically unable to stand, or cannot stand for some reason, then you can complete the Aarti by apologizing to God.
Importance of showing the Aarti flame in the east and south direction.
It is said that the east direction is considered to be the direction of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, the flame of Aarti should be shown in this direction. Lord Vishnu is pleased with this and the blessings of Shri Hari remain upon the person. So the south direction is considered the direction of Yama and ancestors. Therefore, by performing evening aarti in this direction, the ancestors are pleased and the person can also get relief from untimely death.
